About us

Welcome to Autism Unpicked®

We offer private multidisciplinary child and young adult Autism assessments with no wait times in Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and  Derbyshire for young people aged 7-25 years as well as combined Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessments for age 7-17 years.

Assessments can also be carried out with children and young adults from further afield (e.g., Nottinghamshire, Greater/South Manchester, West Yorkshire or elsewhere). Please be aware of travel to one of our Sheffield/Derbyshire locations for one of the appointments (for children). For adults, we are able to work entirely online as appropriate.

We are a team of specialist qualified clinicians experienced and trained in assessing children and young people for Autism and ADHD. The team are registered with the health and care regulator, The Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). We have specialist experience in understanding women and girls alongside all genders and have conducted research and lecture in these areas.

We aim to ‘unpick’ what is happening for people and make sense of their needs.  This may include making a diagnosis. We aim to work in a person-centred, collaborative way meaning the needs of the child or young adult and their family are our priority.  We are a specialist team with significant experience who understand the range of ways neurodivergence may present including more subtly (e.g., we see this sometimes in women and girls).  We are committed to supporting the wellbeing of neurodivergent people and we keep up to date with our understanding via clinical work, listening to autistic people's views, training and conducting and supervising research.

If the child or young adult does receive a diagnosis, this is known as a neurodevelopmental condition.  This means it relates to how the brain has developed and is lifelong.  We aim to offer a clear understanding of Autism and/or ADHD for the child or young person and/or their family and what it means for them.  This includes a balance of  focusing on strengths and skills and considering the things they may find hard to offer the most supportive recommendations.

We are able to offer post-diagnostic support on a case by case basis if this is something you want or need.  We also offer training packages and one-off consultations to schools, workplaces and businesses.

All of our assessments are completed in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines and are based on the established practice of our NHS experience. Please see our frequently asked questions for more information.

Our locations

The in person elements of our assessments will take place at one of our chosen Sheffield, England, United Kingdom (UK) or Derbyshire, England, UK based therapy rooms.  We will discuss and agree the most convenient location with you. There will always be one in person element of assessment for children, but for adults, we can complete the assessment online if appropriate.

*Occasionally we will use the term Autism Spectrum Disorder on our website.  This is the diagnostic term used in the diagnostic manual (DSM-V) we use alongside our clinical decision making to consider if someone meets the criteria for our child Autism assessments and adult Autism assessments.  Therefore, this is the term we will use on your official documents to be clear about the diagnosis made so you can access appropriate support if needed.

However, many people prefer different terms to describe Autism (e.g. Autism Spectrum Condition, Autistic, Neurodiverse, Neurodivergent) and you may or may not have a preference now or over time.  We will respect your preferences in our interactions and aim to be balanced and neuroaffirmative in our report writing

*The term 'disorder' and 'deficit' are part of the diagnostic label ADHD.  However, we recognise the terminology may not be in keeping with an up-to-date understanding of ADHD or with personal preferences. It is important to be clear on the official diagnosis you receive. However, as with Autism assessment, we aim to be balanced in our report writing, whilst providing clear information for you to access the support you may need.
